Barber shop sign – Lishmans Barbershop

Barber shop sign for Lishman’s barbershop, Jesmond. Hand painted with signwriters enamel paint and 23.5 carat gold leaf. The lettering features a traditional two tone or Boston gild. The inside portions of the letter are matt while the inline is mirror gold.

A pattern drawing is placed on the outside of the window and the black artwork outlines are hand painted in reverse on the inside with sable hair brushes and signwriters enamel paint.

A mahl stick is used to rest the painting hand on for stability. The sign is then gilded with the gold leaf before being backed up with black signwriters enamel paint.

A fine outline of varnish seals and protects the artwork edges. With good care these signs will last for decades.
